Soap, SuDS and Sewage – Love the Lea and the Salmons Brook Challenge: the work of Thames 21
Joint Meeting with Edmonton Branch of TES

The talk will be about the state of north east London’s rivers.

The vast majority of them are well below standard, failing ecologically and chemically polluted.

The plight of our urban rivers is sadly an underreported conservation disaster.

It is thought that many rivers are now far cleaner than they were, which is true for industrial pollution and for a few lucky rivers.  But today many are terribly polluted by road run off, sewage pollution and related chemicals discharged into our waterways. Plumbing misconnections are another source of much of the pollution.

I will be presenting these issues, how we can help to alleviate the problem with decisions we make at home, and present some solutions, such as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).

This type of green drainage has so many benefits, providing water cleansing, flood storage, new habitat thus improving biodiversity, amenity and green space for people and cooling urban areas.  Although the problem is very worrying, this will be a positive talk about what we can all do, a call to arms to help save our rivers!
